Land and building

Land

The farm sits in a valley of 24 x 16 plots (each 4 x 4 tiles, 96 x 64 tiles in all). You start with Grandpa's corner (6 plots, the 12 x 8 farm). The rest is wild land: Poncho can roll across it, but can't till it ("That's not our land yet").

  • Open the Land map (L or the Land button). Gold plots are for sale. You can only buy plots that touch land you already own, so the homestead grows outward.
  • Each plot costs more than the last: 50, then about 120, 250, 440... and tens of thousands by the time you own most of the valley. It's the long-term goal.
  • A fence marks the edge of your land. Hover a wild tile to see its plot and whether you can buy it.
  • New land comes wild: brush, trees and boulders (Grandpa's corner is already clear). You can't till or build on them, and trees and boulders block Poncho. Clear them with clear(direction):
ThingHits (at power 1)Gives
Brush11-2 Weeds (5 weeds = 1 Compost at the crafting bench)
Tree33-5 Wood
Boulder53-5 Stone

More power (servos, the Zapper perk) means fewer hits. You can only clear your own land. look(direction) tells a program what's next to Poncho.

  • Potatoes all fit in one bag slot, however many you have.

Building (H)

Open build mode with H or the Build button. Your program keeps running while you build.

  • Pick a group (Paths, Fences, Decor) and a piece. A ghost follows the mouse: green fits, red doesn't.
  • Click to place. Drag paints a line of paths, fences, hedges or flower beds; hold Shift while dragging to fill an area.
  • R rotates (benches, carts), X switches to demolish (you get half the materials back), Ctrl+Z undoes your last placement (full refund), right-click cancels, and H or Esc closes.
  • Pieces cost Wood, Stone, Planks or Bricks (all sold in the shop for now) and a little scrap for lamps. Dirt paths are free.
  • Paths make Poncho faster: dirt +10%, gravel +20%, flagstone and boardwalk +30%. They can't be farmed.
  • Fences, walls and hedges join up and block Poncho. Gates and flower beds let him through. Lamps and other decor can stand on paths.
  • You can only build on your own land, never on growing crops, and never on top of Poncho. Building on tilled soil un-tills it (the soil chemistry stays).

Storage

Chestanything stackable: 16 kinds, 999 each4 planks
Silo (2x3)crops: 8 kinds, 5000 each. Sell straight from it.20 planks, 10 bricks
Seed Vault (2x1)seeds: 12 kinds, 2000 each6 bricks, 2 scrap

Click a storage piece on the farm to open it: take things out, put things in from the bag, or sell crops straight from the silo. Hover it to see what's inside. Demolishing storage puts its contents in the bag (or refuses if they won't fit).

Working buildings

Buildings start as a construction site when you place them (materials are paid up front). Poncho finishes them with build(direction) next to the site: each call is one hit, and it returns True when the building is done. Hover a site to see its progress.

BuildingHitsDoes

While placing a well, sprinkler or hive, the ghost shows its reach. These buildings unlock in Grandpa's Notebook, chapter 5 "Homestead".

Signs, banners and rare decor

  • Signs (24 letters) and banners (10): click one to write on it, hover to read it all. read_sign(direction) lets Poncho read it. Text goes through a filter that masks rude words.
  • Rare decor needs a kit found in ruins crates: Loop Obelisk, Rusted Robot, Old Fountain, Grandpa's Tractor, Windmill. Demolishing one gives the kit back.

Blueprints

In build mode, the Blueprints tab: Save an area (drag a box over something you built, then name it), then pick a blueprint and click where its top-left corner should go to stamp a copy. Up to 20 blueprints, 32x32 each. Stamping uses your materials, places buildings as construction sites for Poncho, and skips pieces that don't fit or aren't unlocked. Ctrl+Z takes a whole stamp back.

The shed

Upgrade Grandpa's shed on the crafting bench's Shed tab (C):
